Fall 2012
Third Grader,
September
The day after Labor Day—the day after we got
back home from Arizona—I went to my third grade
class for the first time. Because Papa was already gone to Panama, Mommy
took some time off from work to take me. The day was so warm that I wore
shorts [right].
The visit was just for an hour, just to
meet my new teacher, Mrs. Yeager, to see my new classroom, and to meet my
new classmates. There are just eleven of us in the class—and six are girls! We
put our supplies away in our desks and made pictures of ourselves to share
with the class.
I'm excited for third grade. I really like
Mrs. Yeager already. I don't think I'll like having more homework than
last year. But I'm excited that the two third grade classes go on a
three-day, overnight field trip to Mount St. Helens in October.

Mom
and Me, September
|
Papa was gone to Panama for the first three
weeks of September. During that time, it was just me and Mom, together. It
didn't rain the whole time Papa was gone, and we had lots of weather that
still felt like summer. Mommy and I did lots of fun things on the
weekends.
One Saturday, after Oranjeschool, we picked
blueberries at the Mercer Slough Blueberry Farm in Bellevue. We picked for
about 45 minutes—I got tired pretty
quickly, but Mom just kept picking—and got a good bucketful
[left]. We took them home and made lemon-blueberry muffins from Trudy's
recipe.
Another afternoon, it was so warm that Mom
took me to Juanita Beach Park. We brought an umbrella, towels, beach toys,
and snacks, and it felt just like July.
We also went to the movies and saw __. It
was kind of scary, but I liked it. And I always like getting the kid's
deal with popcorn, pop, and fruit gummies.
Another day, Mom took me to see lots and
lots of bugs... |
Bug Blast, September
Every fall the Burke Museum at the
University of Washington hosts a Bug Blast. Mom took me on a Sunday
morning. We parked at her office and then walked to the Museum.
At the Blast, I had my face painted like a
big moth [right]. I practiced drawing bugs like a nature artist, and
looked at lots and lots of bugs on pins. We also saw a presentation by the
Bug Chicks, two women who like bugs a lot. They let me pet their hissing
cockroach, and one of them told Mom that I was a real bug geek! (She meant
that as a compliment.)

Remlinger
Farm, October
Mt. St. Helens, October
As part of a unit on land formations, including
volcanoes, the two third-grade classes at Sofia's school went on a 2
1/2-day field trip to Mt. St. Helens in mid-October. Papa went along, too,
and we had a great time! They were very lucky with the region's October
weather, which was sunny just long enough for the two days of hiking and
exploring. The kids stayed near Randall at a cabin facility called Cispus.
In the area, they explored the Ape Caves, the Trail of Two Forests, the
Lava Canyon, and Windy Ridge. They also spent their evenings painting
spirit stones, playing charades, making film canister volcanoes, singing
campfire songs, and of course, eating s'mores. For weeks before the trip,
Sofia had worried that the active volcano (last explosion 1980) would
erupt and the trip would be cancelled. Fortunately, the mountain stayed
quiet! |
